At AZRagIPS, we specialize in taking factory vehicles and turning them into something truly unique. Our recent project for Protomet involved a high-roof Sprinter van that came into the shop with a deep, gloss black factory paint job. While gloss black is a classic look, Protomet wanted a finish that felt more industrial, modern, and rugged—perfectly reflecting their brand’s identity.
The result? A sophisticated partial wrap using premium 3M 2080 series film, combined with essential front-end protection to ensure this workhorse stays looking pristine for years to come.

The Design: A Study in Matte Textures
When you start with a gloss black base, you have a fantastic opportunity to play with contrasting finishes. For Protomet, we moved away from the shine of the factory paint and leaned into a “stealth” aesthetic. We utilized a combination of Matte Metallic Blue and Matte Dark Grey to create a geometric partial wrap.
The Matte Metallic Blue provides a subtle, sophisticated pop of color that shifts beautifully depending on the lighting, while the Matte Dark Grey grounds the design, offering a professional and tactical feel. By using matte finishes against the remaining gloss black sections of the van, we created a multi-textured look that adds depth and visual interest without the need for a full, edge-to-edge wrap.
Why 3M 2080?
For a vehicle that sees as much road time as a Sprinter, material choice is everything. We selected 3M 2080 Wrap Film for several key reasons:
- Conformability: Sprinter vans have deep channels and complex curves. The 2080 series is engineered to stretch and conform to these areas without lifting, ensuring a “painted-on” look.
- Finish Quality: 3M’s matte finishes are industry-leading, providing a consistent, smooth texture that resists fingerprints and maintains its look through various weather conditions.
- Durability: This film is built to last, offering excellent weather resistance and a long lifespan, which is vital for a company vehicle that represents the Protomet brand every day.
Protection Where It Counts: Hood PPF
While the wrap provides a stunning new look, we also addressed a common pain point for van owners: road debris. Because of their flat, upright front ends, Sprinter vans are magnets for rock chips and highway sand-blasting.
To combat this, we applied Paint Protection Film (PPF) to the hood. This optically clear, rugged urethane film acts as an invisible shield. It absorbs the impact of small stones and debris that would otherwise chip the paint or tear the vinyl. By layering PPF over the front of the vehicle, we’ve ensured that Protomet’s investment is protected from the inevitable hazards of the open road.
The Partial Wrap Advantage
This project perfectly illustrates the power of a partial wrap. By strategically placing the Matte Metallic Blue and Dark Grey graphics, we completely transformed the vehicle’s persona while utilizing the factory gloss black as a design element. This approach is not only cost-effective but also allows for a faster installation time, getting the van back into service and on the job where it belongs.
