A new work vehicle earns nothing until it is ready to work. It needs storage that fits your tools, lighting that fits your jobs, and graphics that tell customers who you are. Most Knoxville businesses get that done by hiring three different shops. This guide explains commercial vehicle upfitting, what it covers, and how doing the wrap and the upfit under one roof gets your vehicle on the road and making money sooner.
What Is Commercial Vehicle Upfitting?
Upfitting is everything done to a vehicle after it leaves the factory to make it fit a specific job. For a service van, that usually means shelving, bins, drawers, and a protective floor. For a box truck or work truck, it often means lighting, interior fit-out, and racks. Branding is part of the same job, because a vehicle with a phone number on it brings in work from the road.
You will hear “upfit,” “outfit,” and “vehicle conversion” used for the same idea. In every case the goal is the same: a vehicle your crew can load, work out of, and be recognized in from day one.
Why Splitting the Work Across Vendors Costs You Days
Picture the usual path. The van goes to one shop for shelving. It comes back, then goes to a second shop for lighting. It comes back again, then goes to a wrap shop for graphics. That is three drop-offs, three pickups, three schedules, and three invoices.
The work itself does not take most of that time. The gaps do: waiting for an opening at each shop, waiting for the last shop to finish, and waiting on someone to confirm a measurement the next shop needs. A vehicle sitting in those gaps is a vehicle that is not billing.
When one shop plans the whole job, the gaps shrink. We set the schedule in order, we know what is mounted where, and the wrap is designed around the hardware that is going on the vehicle instead of discovering it afterward.

What We Handle Under One Roof
Wraps and fleet graphics. AZ Rag is a 3M Preferred Installer based in Knoxville. We wrap vans, box trucks, and trailers: full wraps, partial wraps, spot graphics, lettering, DOT numbers, and reflective graphics where a job needs them. Our commercial wrap work is on the commercial vehicle wraps page.
Interior storage and racks. Through Upfit Knoxville, we install Ranger Design van organization systems: shelving, drawers, bins, solid floors, and accessory packages, planned around your trade and your tools. Our van upfitting guide for trade service fleets goes deeper on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical setups.
Lighting and electrical. Work lights, perimeter lighting, and interior cargo lighting are installed through our licensed electrical partner and coordinated by us, so you do not manage a separate contractor. The box truck in the photos above is an example: a full wrap, roof and rear work lights, and a lit cargo area, all planned as one job.

Which Vehicles Do We Work On?
- Cargo vans: Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster, and Mercedes Sprinter are the most common in Knoxville service fleets.
- Box trucks: Wraps and lighting packages for delivery, restoration, moving, and trade fleets.
- Trailers: Enclosed cargo and utility trailers wrapped as rolling signage.
There is no minimum. We wrap single vehicles and upfit single vehicles, and we scale up to full fleets.
How a Combined Upfit and Wrap Job Works
- Scope call. We talk through the vehicle, the work it does, and what your crew carries. You tell us what has to be on it and when you need it back.
- Plan the layout. We decide the interior storage layout, where lights and any exterior hardware mount, and where graphics and lettering land around them.
- Quote and deposit. One quote covers the full scope. See our wrap deposit options or request a quote online.
- Upfit. Interior systems and lighting go in first.
- Wrap. We install graphics after anything that mounts to the exterior is in place, so the film is applied once to a finished surface rather than cut or worked around later.
- Final check and pickup. One walk-around, one pickup, and the vehicle goes to work.
Once your vehicle arrives at our shop, we aim to have it back in your hands in 6 to 8 business days for the wrap and interior shelving. Electrical work can extend that timeline, and we confirm the schedule when we quote the job.
Planning Checklist Before You Upfit a Work Vehicle
Answer these before the vehicle hits the shop and the job moves faster.
- What does the crew carry every day? Tools, parts, pipe, ladders, product. List the heaviest and longest items first.
- What is the payload limit? Shelving, tools, and materials all count against the vehicle's rated payload. Check the manufacturer's rating for your exact vehicle and configuration.
- Which roof height and wheelbase? These decide how much usable interior you actually have.
- Where will you need light? Loading at night, working in unlit lots, and roadside work all call for different lighting.
- Is your artwork ready? If you have a logo and brand colors, we can build the layout. If you do not, we can design it.
- Do you need DOT or other required markings? Our DOT numbers and MC stickers guide covers what Tennessee commercial vehicles typically need.
Standardizing a Fleet
If you run more than one vehicle, the biggest gain comes from making them identical. The same shelving layout means a technician can jump into any van and find the same part in the same place. The same wrap means every vehicle on the road is the same recognizable ad. A single install spec also makes the next vehicle faster to upfit, because the plan already exists.
We offer a combo discount when the wrap and the upfit are booked together, and a fleet discount for multiple vehicles. Both vary by volume, so ask when you request a quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "upfitting" a vehicle mean?
Upfitting is customizing a vehicle after purchase for a specific job: storage systems, lighting, racks, flooring, and graphics.
How long does a commercial upfit and wrap take?
Once your vehicle lands at our shop, we aim to return it in 6 to 8 business days for the wrap and interior shelving. Electrical work may extend that timeline. Combining the work in one shop removes the waiting that happens between vendors, and we confirm the schedule when we quote the job.
Do you install electrical and lighting?
Yes, through our licensed electrical partner. We coordinate the work, so you deal with one shop.
Can I use my own logo and design?
Yes. Send your files and we will lay them out for your vehicle. We also design from scratch.
Do you only work on large fleets?
No. There is no minimum. We wrap and upfit single vehicles as readily as fleets. Discounts vary with volume.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. See our financing options.
