A new Tesla Model Y Performance came into our Knoxville shop in factory paint and left looking like a blacked-out special edition Tesla never built. The owner wanted a full satin black color change with custom carbon fiber accents in the spots that catch the light. Here is how the build came together, the film we used, and why a Model Y Performance is such a strong candidate for a wrap.
Why Satin Black on a Model Y Performance
The Model Y Performance already carries a sharper stance than the standard car, with red brake calipers and a lower ride. Factory paint choices are limited, and most of them show up in every parking lot. A satin black color change wrap gives the car a finish that reads custom from across the lot without crossing into loud. Satin sits between matte and gloss. It holds a deep, even black, hides the reflections that show every flaw on a glossy surface, and photographs as well in daylight as it does under shop lights. The wrap also protects the factory paint underneath, so the original finish is preserved when the film comes off down the road. That matters for resale on a car like this.
The Film: 3M 2080 Satin Black
We wrapped this Model Y in 3M 2080 Satin Black. 2080 is 3M’s cast color change film, engineered for the compound curves and deep channels a Tesla carries around its haunches and bumpers. Cast film conforms and stays conformed, which is why it is the standard for a full color change instead of a cheaper calendered vinyl that wants to shrink back over time. As a 3M Preferred Installer, we install 2080 to the manufacturer’s standard, with edges sealed and post-heated so the wrap lasts.

The Carbon Accents
The detail that sets this build apart is the carbon work. We added custom carbon fiber accents on the rear diffuser, the front lip, and the lower front bumper intakes. Those are the areas where light naturally falls, so a contrasting texture reads as a factory performance package rather than an aftermarket add-on. Carbon accents over a satin black base is a combination we have used before, like the carbon vibes hood on a Dodge Charger Scat Pack, and it works because the texture does the talking without adding any color. Every accent is cut and laid by hand to follow the panel, not stretched over a one-size template.
Why AZ Rag
We have wrapped more Teslas in East Tennessee than we can count, from full color changes to custom race livery. Tesla panels are unforgiving. The tight radii, the flush glass, and the large flat doors all punish a rushed install. We are a 3M Preferred Installer, and we hold every wrap to the same standard, whether it is a daily driver or a Performance build like this one.
